Nonfiction, Essay
Paperback book with illustrations
Written and illustration by Phil Day, this is a creative essay, come personal reflection, on the relationship between Lewis Carrol’s Alice books, personal identity and argumentative opinion. It is the first in a three-book series Phil plans to write on the embattled nature of individual intellectual and creative autonomy.
Continuing our interest in the book as physical artefact, included in this handsome little book is a colour page and images from a drawing by Phil that recreates the style of Tenniel’s original Alice illustrations.
‘In the spirit of the absurdist and playful logic that characterises the Alice books, A Chink in a Daisy-Chain takes us into the rabbit warren of Day’s mind as he free associates, one thought leading to another…’ Sydney Morning Herald
‘If you know your Alice, you’ll love it. And if you don’t, well, you really should!’ ANZ LitLovers
‘…a fun, mind-bending book.’ Whispering Gums
Phil Day has been drawing, teaching art and English to high school students, and collaborating with other writers and artists making hand-made books for twenty years. He runs his own press in Melbourne (Mountains Brown Press).
